Scanning a Homepage

Tips for scanning a digital project, starting with the homepage

Old Weather Homepage, Annotated

  1. What does the homepage tell you? Look for imagery, a tagline, and other descriptive text that speaks to potential users.
  2. Look for and read the About page. A good About page informs the user who developed this project; the purpose or need for the work; the goals–including the process of building or final project outcomes; and the audiences.
  3. What does the main navigation bar tell us about what other content is available in the project?
  4. Look in the footer. It might contain links to About pages, Staff rosters, logos and links indicating participating institutions, affiliations, funders, or terms of use and copyright.
